Readings for Uncertain Times
Readings for Uncertain Times is a monthly online gathering that offers a welcoming environment for discussion that is open to all and encouraging of multiple understandings of the world around us. Lumen (Louise Beer, Melanie King and myself) have developed the series with Elastic Fiction (Becky Lyon), who hosts each session with us. The sessions are embedded and engaged in interrogating more-than-human times, exploring how ‘nature’ has been and still is, colonised, controlled, represented, researched, and protected today. In precarious times we privilege words, philosophies, imaginings of our peers and esteemed thinkers alike for wisdom and guidance. Past headline readings include work by James Lovelock and Bruce Pascoe. The forthcoming session on Friday 9 October will centre on the work of Robin Wall Kimmerer.
To join this and forthcoming reading groups, we ask for a small fee via Patreon, to help with running costs now, and in the future. All subscribers will be offered a place in the reading group and if unable to attend, will receive detailed notes from the session. Anyone that wants to join but does not have the finances to support right now, please let us know via hello@lumenstudios.co.uk - you will be welcome to join us. Participants will be sent suggested passages as recommended reading ahead of the group.
Supported by Arts Council England
The reading group programme is funded by Arts Council England, which supports Lumen’s exploration of sustainable online activities during a time when galleries large and small are looking at alternative offerings for networks of artists and audiences.
